How much mortar do I need?

Mortar quantities depend on what you’re laying and the joint size. As a working guide, allow roughly 0.6 m³ of mortar per 1,000 standard bricks, and about 0.05 m³ per m² of standard blockwork. This calculator uses those rates (plus ~10% waste) and splits the result into approximate sand and cement at your chosen mix ratio. For anything sizeable, ready-mix mortar delivered to site saves the mixing and gives a consistent result.

Mortar calculator — FAQs

How much mortar per 1000 bricks?

As a rule of thumb, around 0.6 m³ of mortar per 1,000 standard bricks with a normal 10mm joint — more for thicker joints or frogged bricks. The calculator applies this rate plus a waste allowance.

What mortar mix should I use?

A general-purpose mix is around 4:1 sand to cement; 3:1 is stronger for exposed or load-bearing work, and a softer 5:1 (often with lime) suits some older or softer masonry. If in doubt, match the existing mortar or ask your builder.

Do you supply ready-mix mortar?

Yes — we supply ready-mix mortar across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, consistent and ready to use with no on-site mixing. Tell us the quantity and mix and we’ll quote it.

Estimates use ~0.6 m³/1,000 bricks and ~0.05 m³/m² blockwork, +10% waste; sand ~1.6 t/m³ and cement split at the chosen ratio. Approximate — a guide only.
