Local ground conditions

The ground beneath Stockport

Stockport straddles the Red Rock Fault: the town centre and ground east of the line sit on Pennine Coal Measures (the town-centre sandstone cliffs are Coal Measures), while ground to the west sits on Sherwood Sandstone, with a concealed coalfield hidden beneath. On top is stiff glacial “Stockport Formation” till on the ridges, giving way to river-terrace sand/gravel and soft alluvium at the Mersey/Tame/Goyt confluence that defines the town.

What that means for your pour: expect a hard split between good till on the ridges and weak, compressible valley alluvium with a high water table; Coal Measures east and concealed west make a Mining Remediation Authority coal search prudent across much of the town, and made/brownfield plots need a sulfate test.

Flood risk — check before you pour

Flood risk in Stockport

Stockport is where the Goyt and the Tame join to become the Mersey, so the town-centre valley floor — Portwood, Brinksway — carries genuine river flood risk and named EA warning areas. The town rises steeply from the rivers, so the risk is concentrated on the low ground.

If your plot is on the low-lying ground, a Flood Risk Assessment may set a raised floor level and flood-resilient construction — a solid, low-permeability slab over continuous tanking. We pour the specified concrete to suit; the FRA and floor levels come from your designer and building control, not from us.

See flood risk & concrete for what’s required. Check the specific address on the EA flood map for planning — only the low-lying/valley-floor part of the area is affected, not the whole town. General guidance only.

Why Barrow Mix?

We run our own quarry, wagons and pumps — a genuinely self-sufficient supplier, so we’re not waiting on anyone else to get your concrete to site. See why that matters →
