New-build foundations in Northwich

We supplied the concrete for the foundations of a new build in Northwich — mixed on site to the specified grade and delivered to the groundworkers’ schedule.

Because we mix as we pour, there was no waste and no waiting — just the exact volume the foundations needed, fresh, from our volumetric wagons.

Northwich has a lot of new-build plots down narrow access drives too tight for a boom pump. A line pump runs hose from the road right up to the footings, so we place the concrete cleanly with no heavy traffic over the site.

The ground beneath Northwich

Northwich is the classic English salt town — the Mercia Mudstone beneath it hosts the Northwich Halite (rock-salt), the very formation named after the town. Centuries of “wild” brine pumping dissolved salt at rockhead, producing the water-filled “flashes” and the town-centre subsidence that famously left buildings jacked and timber-framed. Uncontrolled brine pumping only ceased in 2005, and the town sits within the Cheshire Brine Subsidence Compensation Board’s district.

What that means for your pour: treat as potential wet-rockhead dissolution ground — a site-specific ground investigation is essential, and gypsum in the Mercia Mudstone or any made ground can raise the sulfate class, so never assume a fixed class without a soil test.

Flood risk — check before you pour

Flood risk in Northwich

Northwich town centre sits at the confluence of the Weaver and the Dane, and floods there are well documented — the 2012 town-centre flooding and Storm Christoph in 2021 (which saw a Barnton retirement village rescued). The low centre is a named EA flood-warning area.

If your plot is on the low-lying ground, a Flood Risk Assessment may set a raised floor level and flood-resilient construction — a solid, low-permeability slab over continuous tanking. We pour the specified concrete to suit; the FRA and floor levels come from your designer and building control, not from us.

See flood risk & concrete for what’s required. Check the specific address on the EA flood map for planning — only the low-lying/valley-floor part of the area is affected, not the whole town. General guidance only.

Why Barrow Mix?

We run our own quarry, wagons and pumps — a genuinely self-sufficient supplier, so we’re not waiting on anyone else to get your concrete to site. See why that matters →
